Wearing clothes is an emotion. Women have been wearing colours, fabric, cuts to express themselves for centuries. Offcourse a lot of this is influenced by where you live and what is available to you. Some people wear their traditional clothes with pride while others seek identity in other traditions.
Frieda Kahlo was one such example who celebrated her traditional weaves & artisans and would only wear the floor length skirts with the rectangular shawls. Each fabric was decorated with intricate indigenous work done on it which was distinct to her native land, Mexico. Her style inspired designers across the world and made the traditional textile designs of Mexico extremely popular across the world.
What fascinates me the most about the clothes is how people across centuries have been using cuts, prints and styles to accentuate the body and at the same time try to hide the flaws. For eg: the traditional top worn by Frieda over her flowing skirt was designed in a way that made short people look taller. Since she was in a wheelchair the fabric and the cut of the long skirt had a distinct style that did not gather and make her bottom look fluffy when she sat.
Styles and tastes of humans have evolved over the centuries. Different ethnicities have learnt to adapt their indigenous design/textiles/craft to the latest trends. Lets take the example of a Kaftan. They originated from modern day Iraq and were traditionally made in heavy fabric with intricate embroidery. They were then quickly adopted by the African and the middle Asian continent. Now people across the world are wearing it as a “Bohemian” style statement, especially as a coverall for the day at the beach. Kaftans are easy, breezy and work for all body sizes and shapes
Fashion as I see it is divided in two parts. First for those that are obsessed with the size and therefore shape of the body. Protocol is to create styles and put them in buckets and label them for eg: hourglass, straight, apple and a pear. Don’t get me wrong and I have nothing against them. Then there is a new emerging part where people are creating stuff which is more embracing in nature. I want to be a part of this movement where fashion is more about inclusivity and comfort.
Can we take existing designs and make them more inclusive? Why not? This is why I have chosen the age old “button down” shirts for women and tried to create a fit that cuts across all body types. Where comfort is key but there is so much more to it. Bringing to you the traditional, uptight button down shirts, mixing in some comfortable sizing/fabric and sprinkling oodles of fun with prints.
After spending months studying and experimenting with the perfect size by creating samples for over 40 women in all shapes and sizes I have finally created a style thats size and shape agnostic. The prints are so fun that a red lipstick would give them a high five!
